Why Morocco Took Our Breath Away…And, Why You’ll Love It Too!

IMPERIAL CITIES AND LIVING HISTORY

From Casablanca to Tangier, Fès to Marrakech, we wandered ancient medinas (old, walled portions of a city), explored an ornate mosque, and stood in awe of centuries-old architecture.

Fès, in particular, felt like stepping back in time – its UNESCO-listed medina is the largest living medieval city in the world.Marrakech buzzed with energy, colour, and life. Watching Jemaa el-Fnaa square come alive with musicians, food stalls, and storytellers was unforgettable.

THE RIF MOUNTAINS AND THE BLUE CITY

Tucked into the Rif (pronouced ‘reef’) Mountains, Chefchaouen was every bit as magical as the photos suggest. Shades of blue washed over the city, creating a calm and almost dreamlike atmosphere. The local people love their mountains and clean, fresh air. A crisp morning hike gave us spectacular views and we walked along saffron and cannabis fields.

THE SAHARA DESERT

Traveling from mountains to the Sahara desert was a day none of us will forget. We had a fun 4×4 ride through the dunes, rode camels to watch the sunset and gathered around the fire in the evening to listen to traditional drumming and song. Then spent the night surrounded by stillness and stars. It will be a travel moment that will long stay with us.

ATLAS MOUNTAINS & VILLAGE LIFE

Did you know that Morocco has high mountain ranges? The landscapes changed dramatically as we moved into the Atlas Mountains and one of our group even spotted Barbary macaque monkeys. After winding mountain roads, we hiked to a remote village and stayed overnight in a traditional mountain gîte (guest house).

SOUKS

Wandering through Morocco’s souks (markets) was an experience in itself. Narrow lanes overflowed with colour – handwoven rugs, gleaming lanterns, spices piled high, leather goods, ceramics and textiles at every turn. Bargaining is part of the culture here and it felt more like a friendly dance than a transaction. Vendors are respectful and and our guide gave us tips on how to make sure we paid the right price. It’s lively, a little chaotic, and lots of fun – the kind of place where you lose track of time and leave with stories (and treasures) to bring home.
